Geoparks and local development: what benefits for local population ?

The First International Workshop (deliverable D3.3 Workshop I) of the European H2020 Project GEOPARK took place on 20 and 21 October 2016 in Marrakech (Morocco). The objective of this two-day workshop is to give an international visibility to our project and to the UNESCO Global Geoparks.

Chaired by Professor Ouidad Tebbaa from Cadi Ayyad University (Morocco), this First International Workshop questions the links between Geoparks and local development with special focus on impacts for local population. It also serves as epilogue of the one-week training session in Marrakech, in order to concretize the transfer of knowledge and expertise and also to situate students in the center of actual issues in the field of Geopark on a wider stage.

Over 30 students and researchers participated in the workshop, speakers include not only members of the consortium, but also guests from academia (Prof. Igor Babou from Paris Diderot University, Associate Prof. Kejian Xu from China University of Geoscience), from civil society (Fundacion Abertis, International Council of Museums, Association APPGM) and from geopark community (M’goun Global Geopark and JbelBani Aspiring Geopark from Morocco, Conca de Tremp-Montsec Aspiring Geopark from Spain, Xinwen Global Geopark and Shennongjia Global Geopark from China).
